“rabbit, rabbit”

July 31, 2008 · Leave a Comment

That is what Jason tells me you are supposed to say to welcome in a new month.  So tomorrow morning before you say anything else – you say ‘rabbit, rabbit’ and you will have good luck all month.  I definitely need some luck so I am going to try really hard to remember.  My first words in the morning are usually, “I hear him- will you get up?”

Here are some pics of what I am contending with this week.  Cruisin’ the furniture.  I guess I should count my blessings that he is pretty good at it.  He usually can fall on his butt pretty carefully.  Not always though.  Jason has been asking me if we should get a baby helmet.  I thought he was joking.  But there really are baby helmets!  I wonder if I should get one..?  That might be a little too over the top – even for me.  Sure would be funny though :)   What if you made your kid wear this!?  (and I am not talking about the flat-head helmets.  these are helmets made specifically for kids learning to walk)  And on that note – I just heard a bang and now crying.  Gotta go!

someone is very proud of themselves

look at those choppers

Speaking of teeth (in my shark-baby)… yup, i found another one.  I don’t even know what the total is now up to – 20?  Only joking – there are 5, with a possible 6 within the next week.  Almost enough to get him a baby grillz

Aberystwyth, Wales

July 29, 2008 · 2 Comments

Yea, say that 5 times fast!   We had a day to kill and a country attached to us that we had never seen – so off we went to Aberystwyth in Wales yesterday.  It took about 3 hours (due West) to get there. Thank goodness for our sat-nav!  Apparently my Mom’s side of the family is from Wales originally so I have been anxious to go.  It was such a gorgeous drive.  Jason & I both said more than once how much it reminded us of Maui and the drive to Hana.  Very lush and green and wind-y!  We headed straight for some lunch beside the beach before checking out the sights.

The ruins of Castle Aberystwyth are right on the coast so we made sure to see that – we both love castles.  There isn’t much left of this one – but it was very pretty nonetheless.  I think it’s our first castle we have been to on the ocean – very scenic.  We also took a trip on the longest electric cliff railway in GB -Constitution Hill/Railway.  It was very cool – well worth 2 GBP and gave us some fantastic views of the coast.  Ty put his feet in the cold water and had his first taste of ice cream – I guess it was his first train ride too!  So the first trip to Wales for the Handley family was a great success :)

Do you know anyone who speaks Welsh?  I have met a few people and have found it the craziest language I have ever heard.  Maybe that’s because you don’t hear it very often?  (I am trying to give it the benefit of the doubt)  Jason and I had a great time trying to pronouce the signs and street names.  He swears someone just made up their own version of pig-latin and it stuck.

For example:

Rydw i’n dod o America. I’m from America.

how do you pronounce that first word?!  hahahahaa

Oh yea, and i found another tooth in my shark-baby’s head, that bring the total up to 4!  Feels like I am finding them on a daily basis… (and being bitten by them)

Immunizations & Insects

July 23, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Today was a wonderfully surprising warm day in the UK – woo hoo!  In case you missed all my previous complaining (how could you?) this summer has been one of the worst weather wise in British history.  So when a nice day comes around – people go nuts!  I feel the same – this fervent need to take full advantage of every warm and sticky hour.  BUT (what, you didn’t think I could find something to complain about?) when it’s warm – the fact that there is no air conditioning AND no screens poses a bit of a problem.  You have to keep the windows open or you will melt but your house will be filled with everything from outside.  In our case this has included thousands of flies, mosquitos, bees & wasps, unidentifiable things and even a cat.  Yes, a cat.  And for my poor friend Heidi, a bat.

A beautiful day and poor Ty had to have another immunization this morning in his big ‘ol fat thigh.  The nurse loves him – he doesn’t even flinch or cry (though he may bite).  His shot combined with that big tooth coming in made for a fussy baby this afternoon.  Jason & I met a friend at our local (Morton’s) for lunch and Ty munched (fairly) contently on a pickle while we ate.  Then we headed to the park to enjoy every drop of the rare sunshine!

look at this happy baby!

super silly sunday

A few cocktails and an eyebrow pencil is all it takes to entertain us, obviously.

And guess what I noticed this afternoon?  Another TOOTH!  A top one – but not one of the 2 big front ones!  That’s going to look pretty goofy when it comes in :)   So that makes 3 little chiclets now…

*** JASON JUST CALLED ME FROM THE BRITISH OPEN *** If you are bored enough and watching it you may have seen him on tv.  He said he was just next to Prince Andrew!  Very cool – from Rocky Mount to rubbing elbows with Royalty… what’s next?!!

I know all you American folk are baking this summer – but give a thought to your British peeps while you are at the pool complaining of the heat.  What’s the date today??  July something I am pretty sure… and Jason woke me up this morning in search of his LONG JOHNS!  I am not kidding.  He is off to the British Open (I think) today and has multiple layers on including a fleece sweatshirt.  WHATEVER.  I am so over this!

7 months tomorrow!? SHUT UP!

July 16, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Tomorrow Ty will be 7 months old.   This is completely shocking to me for some reason.  Maybe because he still acts like a newborn some days! (today being one of those days)

I think it’s also that having a 7 month old sounds like you should know what you are doing by now as a parent.  Or you should have lost all your baby weight.  Or you should be completely ‘together’ and ready for another child.  HA!

Here’s what the ‘net has to say about 7-month olds;

The 7-month-old’s motor skills include:
* Creeping, may begin to crawl. CHECK
* Transfers objects from hand to hand; CHECK
* Supports most of weight; bounces actively. UMM.. CHECK
* Balancing well when sitting and hands are free. DEFINITE CHECK
* Grasping blocks with thumb and fingers. CHECK
* Holding an object in each hand at the same time. AND BASHING THEM TOGETHER

The 7-month-old’s language skills include:
* May say “Da-Da” or “Ma-Ma.”  STILL ONLY MAMA :)   JASON LOVES THAT
* Speaking two-syllable words with vowels. WHAT?! NO..
* Attempting to imitate sounds or sequences of sounds. KIND OF

The 7-month-old’s mental abilities include:
* Concentrating and showing interest in detail. DOES PICKING UP CARPET LINT COUNT?
* Enjoying noise-making toys like bells, music boxes, or rattles. CHECK
* Beginning to learn the meaning and consequences of familiar acts. CHECK
* May begin imitating. IS CLAPPING!

The 7-month-old’s social traits include:
* Exploring body with mouth and hands. Boys discover and explore genitals. DEFINITE CHECK
* May fear strangers. NEGATIVE
* Resisting pressure to do things he does not want to do. HAS BEEN DOING THIS SINCE BIRTH
* Anticipating play and plays with toys. CHECK (MAINLY PLAYS WITH THINGS THAT ARE NOT TOYS; THE IRON, HAIR STRAIGHTENER, SCISSORS, ETC.)
* Giving hugs and kisses to familiar adults. NOT REALLY – I THINK HE LIKES THE DOGS BEST

THIS IS GREAT – CHECK THIS OUT AND TURN ON YOUR SOUND :)

rain, rain, go away

July 12, 2008 · Leave a Comment

This is hands down the worst week in British weather I can remember.  It is so depressing.  Rain rain rain non-stop.  So we have had to get creative with things to do with Ty.  Usually I take atleast 3 walks a day and go to the playground with him daily.   So we have had to turn the house into a playground!
